What3Words Installation Notes

W3W is a free App which you can download to Apple or Android smartphones.  You should do this before going on walks, not just when you need it.  It works by satellite so it does not need a data connection to use it.

To proceed, set up an Apple or Google account if you haven’t already done so.  The download process is easy to follow but for those who need more guidance here it is:

To download W3W to iPhones:

  • Open the App Store app at www.apple.com/uk/ios/app-store.
  • Top right, click on Open the App.
  • At the bottom, click on Apps.
  • At the bottom, click Search then click onWhat3Words.
  • On the W3W image, download to your device by clicking the Cloud symbol with a down arrow.
  • Click Open.
  • Your W3W location appears as three computer-generated words separated by full stops.  This is your exact W3W location as a 3-metre square.
  • To give your location to the emergency services, send these three words by phone, text, email or WhatsApp.  Ensure exact spelling however sent.

To download to Android phones:

  • Login to your Google account.
  • Ensure your ‘Location’ setting is set to On.
  • Open the Google Play App Store at play.google.com.
  • In the App Store search bar enter What3Words App.  If the App Store search bar is not displayed click on the magnifying glass icon.
  • Click on the link to the App, if one is displayed.
  • Click on the green Install button.
  • Click on the green Open button.
  • First time through:
    • Select Language (English UK).
    • Set the permissions for ‘Allow W3W to access your location’ to Yes.
    • Click the arrows to page through the information about W3W.
  • Your W3W location appears as three computer-generated words separated by full stops.  This is your exact W3W location as a 3-metre square.
  • To give your location to the emergency services, send these three words by phone, text, email or WhatsApp.  Ensure exact spelling however sent.

Below are details of amendments to the Emergency Procedures pack:

  • A new Card 3 is enclosed with this Programme booklet.  On Side 2 you will see a new line to record the W3W location in an emergency.  Please write your personal details on the new Side 2 and discard the original Card 3.
  • Also enclosed is an adhesive label summarising W3W.  Please stick this onto Side 1 of your existing Card 1 in the space at the bottom.
